Need of Face Shield for Protection against Coronavirus

The programme for promoting Face Shield for the protection from coronavirus was adopted by Socio-Economic Welfare Society, India, in the best interest of the safety of the community. Shields were made by the young volunteers and distributed free to the people who were providing essential services and could be exposed to the infection.

HOW TO MAKE IT AT HOME

  • Today We are going to discuss the need of face shield for protection against coronavirus and the technique of making it.
People are using masks as protection from from Covid-19, but we feel only using a mask is not enough because in such cases our eyes and part of our face is exposed as receivers of infection.
Similarly maintaining distance is a good approach but not sufficient, there are some cases where people got infection without coming in direct contact of the infected . Although corona-virus can travel through droplets which may fall down after a certain distance but some experts believe that it may also remain in air for a little more time in the form of aerosol. So in such a case if an infected person sneezed or coughed at a particular place then that area may remain prone to spread disease for some time - may be upto half- an- hour or so.
For further protection we must use a face Shield which could protect our eyes and face also. So let us discuss the easiest and simple way to make a face Shield at home.

For this we need the following materials :

    1. Transparent PVC sheet of A4 size or little longer if not available then a transparent file folder may also be used.

    2. A piece of foam with an approximate dimensions of one inch by one and half inch by 9 inch and a 14 inches long elastic ribbon

    3. Other required instruments are scissor, Cutter blade, stapler and any suitable adhesive or double sided tape

PROCEDURE

1. Cut the two corners of Transparent sheet in a circular pattern from the same length side so that it should not hurt on the shoulders or neck

2. Cut the foam with suggested dimensions and make its two corners round towards the same longitudinal side and on the other longitudinal side put 4 marks at equi distances and cut out small triangles from those marks so that it should be able to turn.

3. On the width edge of the sheet Paste the foam towards its rounded side and leave it to set properly

4. On the foam side staple an elastic ribbon on both the corners of the sheet like this…

Now your face shield is ready to protect you which is easy to make and comfortable to wear.

Even if an infected person wears it, the droplets coming out from him will also be stopped by this shield.

So we feel that in public places wearing such shields should become mandatory at least for some time.

A thought should be given on the usage of such face-shields in the school labs also where students deal with chemicals etc.
